The actress and performance artist Mareike Wenzel has received a BA(Hons) in Acting from “Birmingham School of Acting” in 2004.

Mareike has been member and devising actress of the Danish-Austrian performance collective SIGNA since 2007, acting in most of their performances, several winning awards. She has played amongst others at Volksbühne Berlin, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Schauspiel Köln, Central Theater Leipzig, as well as Salzburger Festspiele and Theatertreffen Berlin.

Mareike also devices her own performances. Her own work focuses on narrative spaces, combining different realities by overlapping and questioning private and public spheres, creating immersive performances on different social realities. She clearly defines her work as political, aiming at creating a space for discussion and exchange.

She is teaching and running workshops in performance, theatre, and theatre in social contexts, amongst others at the Center of Contemporary Art Tbilisi and Hildesheim University and for various organisations, also internationally. She has been one of the first fellows graduating from the certificate course “Artistic Interventions in Cultural Education” by Hildesheim University and Mercator Stiftung.

Mareike is the founder of the Georgian emancipatory children’s theatre company Aitsona-Daitsona (the seesaw) having directed five plays for children and young people, creating  theatre and arts in educational workshops and devising plays and performances with children and young people.
